The medals and personal effects of an unsung hero of D-Day have emerged for sale for £6,000.
Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Bain trialled the amphibious Duplex Drive tanks ahead of the Normandy landings in June 1944.
He commanded three DD training schools preparing tanks for sea and river assaults, reporting personally to Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.
The dangerous trials, which tested the 'waterproofing' of the amphibious armoured vehicles, were carried out off the south coast of England.
