A remarkable polar archive collated by a crew member on Captain Scott's doomed Terra Nova expedition has sold for £161,000 after being discovered in an old trunk in a garage.
The archive, which was found at a South West England property, contained previously unseen expedition charts, as well as photos and a poignant poem in tribute to Robert Scott.
It belonged to the family of Francis 'Chippy' Davies who served as the Terra Nova's carpenter and oversaw the preparation and building of the expedition huts on Antarctica.
He also constructed the wooden memorial cross after the death of Scott and his team which still stands on Observation Hill.
