The bravery medals of a hero of the daring Zeebrugge Raid who 'stormed the mole' are being sold by his family for £20,000.

Major Bernard Weller led the 4th Royal Marine Battalion landing party in a 'surprise' attack on the Belgian port on April 23, 1918.

Their aim was to subdue German defences on the mile-long causeway protecting the harbour to enable the Royal Navy to sink ships in the Bruges-Ostend canal, blocking the path of German U-Boats.

Their best-laid plans were thwarted when smoke cover cleared, making them easy targets for the German forces stationed there - but they still fought valiantly for an hour, during which 200 men were killed.
