The bravery medals of a First World War Tommy who single-handedly captured a dozen German soldiers today sold for over £5,000.

Lieutenant Herbert Alfred Disney was awarded the Military Cross and Bar and Distinguished Conduct Medal for his exploits at the Western Front.

He was one of the most highly decorated officers of the Machine Gun Corps, with his numerous citations extolling his 'splendid example' and 'devotion to duty'.

At the Battle of the Sambre in November 1918, just a week before the Armistice, he attacked a machine-gun post.

He captured two enemy machine guns and 12 prisoners, silencing the enemy fire which was holding up the British advance.
