The UK's only flowering Puya plant.

It's like the Day of the Triffids at the Abbotsbury sub-tropical gardens in Dorset this week as the mild winter and wet and warm spring has caused a huge growth spurt for its exotic range of plants from all over the world.

Included in the strange sights is the earliest ever blooming in the UK of the Chilean Sheep Eating plant Puya berteroniana, which despite having a fearsome reputation for trapping mammals in its barbed fronds also has a delicious nectar that can be drunk.
