A defiant British PoW's 'escape kit' which he used to make bids for freedom during World War Two has been unearthed.

Major Denis Faulkner, who was captured in France in 1940, was a 'camp locksmith' on escape committees in German camps.

His kit, kept in a small cloth bag, includes a metal handle for a suitcase which breaks open to reveal a tissue paper escape map. There is also an assortment of lock picking tools and keys which enabled him to steal supplies from storerooms.

Another fascinating item in the bag is an envelope containing reconnaissance notes on escape routes from Germany into Holland.

Maj Faulkner's wartime archive, which also boasts his uniform, camp papers and secretly taken photos, is being sold by his family 77 years on with C & T Auctions, of Ashford, Kent.
