Paper clip saucer sells for £31,000...

An exceptionally rare 700 year old Chinese lacquer box has sold for £31,000 after being discovered by chance containing a stamp and some paperclips.

It was spotted by an eagle-eyed auctioneer perched on a hallway mantelpiece during a routine valuation at a detached house in Somerset.

From a distance it appeared to be made of red plastic, but on closer inspection it was identified as from the Yuan (1279-1368) or early Ming dynasty.
The 4ins red circular box is carved with a central peony blossom surrounded by leafy stems and budding flowers against a background with a distinctive golden hue.
