The official car standard for legendary German commander Erwin Rommel is being sold by the family of a former British officer who befriended his widow after the war.<br />

Brig Desmond Young was captured by the Nazis in Libya and while being interrogated, Rommel personally intervened to protect him.<br />
<br />
After the war Mr Young befriended Rommel's widow Lucia and wrote a biography called 'Rommel: The Desert Fox'.<br />
<br />
Mr Young and Frau Rommel struck up a friendship and she presented him with the standard after he gifted her the European rights to his book as an act of kindness due to her penniless state.<br />
<br />
Estimated at £12,000, the historic item will go under the hammer at Lawrence's auction house in Crewkerne, Somerset on November 14th.
