Big breath - Liv celebrates after making it back to the surface after her 55 metre dive.

A British woman is celebrating after being crowned world champion in freediving.

Liv Philip scored 306 points in three different disciplines to win the competition, 84 points ahead of her nearest rival.

Freediving relies on a diver's ability to hold their breath until resurfacing and not using any apparatus, such as scuba gear.

To win the competition the 39-year-old competed in three depth disciplines: constant weight to 55 metres, where a freediver swims up and down a line using a monofin, free immersion to 50 metres, where a diver pulls up and down the line, and constant weight no fins to 40 metres, where the diver propels themselves with just their arms and legs.

The World Cup event is made up of two events - the Mediterranean Cup in June and the Eurocup this month - and Liv got the highest score at both events in Greece to win the overall World Cup.

She has been the British Freediving Champion seven times and won a bronze medal at the World Championships last year. She is currently in Sardinia for the Team World Championship.
