One of the most important single-owner suffragette collections to emerge on the market in many years has sold for over £360,000 after a bidding war.
Lesley Mees spent almost 40 years acquiring over 100 rare mementos from the hard-fought early 20th century campaign to secure women the vote.
Some lots went for 12 times their pre-sale estimate as collectors fought over unusual items at the London-based auctioneers Bonhams.
Lesley's impressive collection included an 116 year-old rediscovered painting by movement founder Sylvia Pankhurst entitled 'The Chainmaker', which fetched £48,000.
A Hunger Strike medal awarded to Maud Joachim, who was arrested after interrupting a talk by Winston Churchill, made £41,600, while a unique suffragette chess set achieved £38,400.
