Groundbreaking roadside verges
Dr Philip Sterling a has a close look at the pyramidal orchid.
Verging on the spectacular...Motorists and nature lovers alike are enjoying a spectacular display of wild orchids that are a pleasant legacy from the 2012 Olympics.
The eye-catching flowers were planted on the banks and verges next to the Weymouth relief road that was built ahead of the games.
The spectacular feat was the brainchild of local ecologist Dr Philip Sterling who came up with an unusual method of planting back in 2010.
Whereas usually roadside banks are covered in a thick layer of top soil to allow grass to grow, in this case it was banned.
