A silver cigarette case gifted to literary giant Oscar Wilde by the male lover he went to prison for is being sold for as much as £100,000.

The playwright received the exquisite item from Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas as a present upon leaving jail in 1897.

The aristocrat had the case inscribed with an apt verse from a poem about complex love by Wilde's favourite poet John Donne.

The case was recovered from Wilde's Paris hotel room following his death in 1901 by the hotel owner and was passed down to his grandson.
