The fascinating archive of one of the engineers who designed the Mulberry Harbours which were installed off the Normandy coast following the D-Day landings has come to light.
Colonel Vassal Charles Steer-Webster OBE helped create the giant, floating artificial harbours which protected anchored supply ships from German attacks.
They were built in the dry docks on The Thames and Clyde and pulled across the channel by tugs before being hastily assembled.
Col Steer-Webster was in almost daily contact with Churchill during their development ahead of June 6, 1944. Now, his personal effects, including a letter of thanks from Winston Churchill, are being sold by his nephew with Mitchells Auctioneers, of Cockermouth, Cumbria.
The archive, which is expected to fetch £15,000, also features 150 photos showing Mulberry B's construction and use, as well as his medals.
