The bravery medal awarded to a hero Blitz firefighter who 'ran through a wall of flames' during a dramatic rescue has emerged for sale for £4,000.
Company Officer John Cornford and his station officer risked their lives to save a man collapsed on a pavement between blazing street warehouses.
They dodged falling debris to carry the injured man to safety following the German bombing of London.
C/Off Cornford, of the London County Council Fire Brigade, received the George Medal for gallantry for his life-saving exploits during the December 29, 1940 incident.
