A huge masterpiece painting by the satirical artist Robert Colescott has sold for £2.8m ($3.5m).<br />
<br />
Created in 1980, the 6ft by 7ft painting, titled '1919' is said to be the American painter's most important work.<br />
<br />
The multi-coloured acrylic on canvas painting combines Colescott's personal family history and identity with race in the US.<br />
<br />
The painting was sold by his family for the first time at Bonhams in New York.
