The government has imposed an export ban on a 'nationally important' Victoria Cross after it was bought at auction by a foreign buyer for £680,000.
The prestigious gallantry medal was one of just 22 awarded to a member of the RAF during the Second World War and the only one for their action in the Far East.
It was won by Squadron Leader Arthur Scarf who was fatally wounded while he single-handedly attacked a heavily defended Japanese air base in Malaya.
His Blenheim light bomber was raked with machine gun and cannon fire, causing him to drift in and out of consciousness in mid-air.
