Pictured: Elizabeth I, Pattern Groat, 1601, in gold with an estimate of £15,000, sold for £480,000.
The family of a late steeplejack are celebrating today after his incredible collection of rare coins sold for a whopping £2.8m.
The 52 coins from the Tudor and Stuart periods were amassed by prolific collector Horace Hird over 50 years.
He died in 1973 and it had been presumed he had sold all his coins while he was still alive. But a descendant found dozens of them still wrapped with their paperwork dating back to the 1960s.
