Stuart Jones, 54, at Bournemouth Crown Court.

A former fishery owner has been jailed for the "barbaric and inhumane" killing of an otter in the first prosecution of its kind in the UK.

Stuart Jones, 54, shot the Eurasian otter, which is a protected species, in the head after another fisherman caught it in his carp landing net.

At the time Jones was the owner of Lyons Gate Campsite and Fishery in Dorchester, Dorset, and had set traps for several otters eating stock from his four fishing lakes.

Jones was reported by horrified anglers who were staying at the campsite and witnessed the slaughter.

He later admitted to police that he knew it was illegal and had done his own online research.
