An extraordinary never-before-seen archive of letters from the Queen and Prince Charles to a trusted aide has emerged for sale for £80,000.

The correspondence that spans 40 years gives an intimate insight into life inside the Royal household and covers all manner of subjects including the deaths of King George VI and Louie Mountbatten, rock and roll music and a former gym mistress with large thighs.

The recipient was Michael Farebrother, a former Grenadier Guard who patrolled Windsor Castle and later, as a schoolmaster, became Prince Charles' private tutor.

As well as numerous letters sent from Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral and Sandringham, the archive contains 26 candid photographs Mr Farebrother took of the Royal family, mostly in the 1950s.
