The amazing story of the first 'Bridge Too Far' is told in a new book which commemorates the 75th anniversary of a remarkable, little known World War Two offensive.
The heroism of the British paratroopers defending Arnhem bridge during Operation Market Garden in September 1944 has emerged into folklore and was immortalised in the 1977 film A Bridge Too Far.
Yet, many of the same protagonists took part in another epic struggle with their German foes over a bridge in Sicily one year earlier during the Allied invasion of the island.
Former paratrooper Mark Salinger has extensively researched the Battle of Primosole Bridge, a hellish three day combat which lasted from July 13-16, 1943, for his new book, The First Bridge Too Far.
