Master thatcher Scott Symonds puts the finishing touches to the new straw roof at the former home of Victorian author Thomas Hardy.

The National Trust, which owns the picturesque cottage near Dorchester, Dorset, has closed the historic property for more than a month while it undergoes vital conservation work.

On the inside new structural supports have been installed and the stone floor repointed after taking a battering from thousands of visitors over the years.
And on the outside the roof has been re-thatched by Scott and his dad Dave who even appeared was an extra in the 2015 film adaptation of Hardy's Far From the Madding Crowd.
