Kind-hearted fishmongers have returned a monster lobster called Maximus to the sea as they couldn't bring themselves to kill him.

The colossus crustacean, which is believed to be 70-years-old, was caught last year off Weymouth, Dorset, by a local fisherman.

The 2.5ft long lobster and many others were sold to Weyfish fishmongers who decided to spare it from the pot due to its age and sheer size.

They said the 'prime specimen', which weighed 9lbs, deserved to go back into the sea to help with breeding stocks.

They kept him in the tank over winter and have now thrown him back into Weymouth Bay ahead of the breeding season.
