A pair of shotguns commissioned by Queen Victoria as a gift to her husband Prince Albert have emerged for sale for £40,000.

The weapons are the only known examples outside the Royal Collection.

They were made by renowned London gunsmith Charles Lancaster in about 1850.

Prince Albert was a regular customer of the New Bond Street business and ordered his first pair of 15-bore guns in 1843 and the company received the Royal Warrant later that year.
