The prestigious Nobel Prize awarded to the pioneer of penicillin has been put up for sale for £500,000.
Sir Ernst Chain picked up the fine work made by Alexander Fleming who discovered the antibiotic in 1928.
But its widespread practical application did not happen until biochemist Chain and colleague Howard Florey got involved in the late 1930s.
The were able to isolate and concentrate the element in penicillin that kills bacteria and thus make it into an effective and manufacturable drug.
