A rare collection of hand-coloured slides showing some of the earliest images of animals at London Zoo have emerged almost 150 years later.

Among the fascinating pictures from 1870 are extinct animals like the quagga, a type of zebra of which only a handful of images exist.

Other famous animals pictures include Jumbo the elephant, which was later sold to 'Greatest Showman' P.T Barnham, and Obaysch the hippo which drew 10,000 visitors a day.
The 48 'Magic Lantern' slides will be sold by Penzance-based auctioneers David Lay with an estimate of £3,000.
