A huge solid gold horse racing trophy which has been kept in a private collection for the last 40 years has emerged for sale for £120,000.
The 1.5ft high Ascot Gold Cup was presented to St George Henry Lowther, 4th Earl of Lonsdale, after his horse, Petrarch, won the prestigious race in 1877.
The 18 carat gold trophy, which weighs 7lbs, is crowned with a classical youth holding the reins of a rearing stallion.
