The medals of a hero of the legendary Operation Jericho raid who dive-bombed the enemy from 10ft during a daring attack on a Gestapo prison have emerged for sale for £6,000.

Flight Lieutenant Maxwell Sparks pulled off the daring manoeuvre during the daylight attack on the heavily-defended Amiens Prison in Northern France in February 1944.

Positioned third in the attack's first wave, he flew at 'tree-top height' while bombarding the German guards' quarters, before ascending just in time to miss the prison's roof.
