The picking of wild mushrooms has been banned in parts of the New Forest in an attempt to crack down on illegal 'gangs' said to be stripping the ancient woodland of fungi.

The National Trust said it will no longer allow foragers to pick mushrooms on five areas of land it owns in the ancient woodland after declaring it "impossible" to police the amounts taken.

Currently it is legal to take 1.5kg of mushrooms per person per day from the New Forest National Park providing it is for personal use.
