A stunning private collection of world famous pottery gathered by a ceramics enthusiast over 20 years is tipped to sell for £10,000.

The beautiful vases and pots were created at Poole Pottery in Dorset in the 1950s using the abundance of red clay in the harbour.

There are a variety of delicate plates, vases and lamp bases going under the hammer at auctioneers Woolley and Wallis, of Salisbury, Wilts.

A highlight of the sale is a majestic 12ins vase with two openings painted with the totem design in red, yellow and blue.

Auctioneer Michael Jeffery said: "It is one of the most comprehensive representations of Poole Pottery's ground-breaking designs of the 1950s, and shows to beautiful effect the work they were producing at the time.

"The light and airy designs were a new direction for the pottery, which had been used as air-raid shelters and manufacturing structural ceramics during the Second World War.

"When the restrictions on sale of decorative objects were lifted in 1952, the factory saw a new lease of life which is reflected in the spring-like and colourful pieces on sale here."
