An archaeological dig is underway at the site of a bloody Civil War battle in a bid to uncover artefacts hidden for 376 years.
Four exploratory trenches have been dug as part of the excavation of the former medieval high street in Weymouth, Dorset.
The seaside town witnessed the Battle of Weymouth in February 1645 where Parliamentarians outnumbered by six to one saw off a Royalist plot to seize it.
Five hundred people were killed during the fighting and had the Royalists won, Charles I would have secured the safe south coast port he needed to land 35,000 French troops - potentially altering the course of history.
