Gramtastic...Bumper crop of saffron.

Britains only saffron farmer David Smale starts harvesting a bumper crop.

Exotic saffron has returned to the fields of England once again thanks to the efforts of intrepid Essex farmer David Smale.

David has cultivated his precious crop at a top secret location within a stone's throw of Saffron Walden in what was once the heartland of British production in Tudor times.

Local growers died out as the painstaking harvesting methods became to expensive to continue with compared to imported spice from remote Iran and Kashmir.

But David realised that saffron is spice gold - by far the most expensive flavouring in the world - and worth the back breaking effort of harvesting the three precious stigma's from each flower that sells for £75 a gram.

As Britains only grower of the tasty spice he is now reaping the benefits of his labours with sales booming at up market retailers like Fortnum & Masons and Partridges and is shortly to launch his unique English Saffron Gin at Gillrays bar in London.
