The medals and logbooks of a tragic novice pilot who was killed during the legendary Dambusters Raid have emerged for sale for £10,000.

Pilot Officer Vernon Byers, of Victoria Cross recipient Wing Commander Guy Gibson's 617 Squadron, piloted 'K King' during Operation Chastise on the night of May 16, 1943.

Despite only having flown three sorties, he volunteered for the perilous mission to destroy several dams in Germany's industrial valley using Barnes Wallis' 'bouncing bombs' when others declined.

P/Off Byers was shot down by German guns over the Dutch coast while en route to the Sorpe Dam, with the entire seven man crew killed.

His body was never recovered and his final logbook entry simply reads: "'OPS' SORPE. MISSING." His affairs are going under the hammer with London based auctioneers Spink & Son.
