The Victoria Cross awarded to a soldier who volunteered for a suicidal mission after seeing five comrades killed attempting it has today sold for £248,000.

Private James Towers bravely stepped forward as the sixth man to dash out in front of enemy machine gun posts and try to get a vital message to a cut-off platoon 150 yards away.

He did this despite witnessing the five previous runners - including his best friend - get cut to pieces.
Pte Towers, whose medals were sold with Dix Noonan Webb, miraculously survived the mission at Mericourt on the Western Front in the final months of World War One.
