The gallantry medals of a World War One hero went on to become a thorn in Winston Churchill's side during the Second World War have emerged for sale.

Lieutenant Richard Stokes was twice awarded the Military Cross in the First World War for risking his own life to save others.

First, in 1917, he took the place of a forward observer in the Royal Artillery who had just been killed in action.

With no thought to his own safety he repeatedly went out into the exposed battlefield to fix broken telephone lines and restore communication with the main battery.

Every time he did he rescued several wounded colleagues while under intense enemy fire.
