A recently rediscovered archive by an early abolitionist who fought to oppose the slave trade 200 years ago have been sold by his ancestor for over £58,000.
Nicolas Wood, 64, found documents detailing Anglo-American Samuel Starbuck's attempts to build momentum for the emancipation movement during a house clear-out.
The collection had been kept in pristine condition and passed through more than five generations of the family.
The documents, including a detailed sketch of a British slave ship, gives an unprecedented insight into the beginnings of the anti-slavery alliance.
The archive sparked a bidding war at Catherine Southon Auctioneers of Chislehurst, south east London.
