Remarkable candid photos of the cast of The Great Escape letting their hair down at Oktoberfest have come to light 58 years on.

They have emerged from the archive of the late Hollywood actor James Garner, who played Flight Lieutenant Robert Hendley in the classic 1963 film.

Garner can be seen swigging a beer from a tankard with cast and crew members including fellow actor Charles Bronson.

Other photos taken on set show the American actor reading a book about the Third Reich to research the role, and there is a signed picture of him on the back of Steve McQueen's motorbike.
