The outstanding bravery of a professional footballer who led a daring attack on a German stronghold 'capturing or killing' 60 of the enemy can be revealed after his bravery medals emerged for sale.
Sergeant Donald Gray was captain of Scottish football team Partick Thistle and his exemplary leadership was also displayed on the Western Front.
On the night of April 23, 1917, his 10 man party stormed a chemical works at Roeux held by 60 adversaries.
He was fuelled by tragedy as his older brother Corporal Willie Gray, who played alongside him at Partick and also for Southampton, was killed at the Somme five months earlier aged 34.
