A broody hen has left her owners shell-shocked after repeatedly leaving her coop to lay 37 eggs in secret in the hope they wouldn't be taken away.

The bantam hen, named Raindrop, has spent the last five weeks wandering off from her pen through a gap in a hedge to the private nest under a tree 500 yards away.

Owner Sandra Palmer, from Poole, Dorset only discovered the large pile of eggs when she noticed the bird was missing one day and went looking for her.

She eventually spotted two-year-old Raindrop sitting on top of an enormous nest.
After laying more than three dozen, the hen tried to nest the haul in the hope they would hatch.
