An ancient wooden carving of St Agnes that was rescued from a burning cathedral by a First World War airman has emerged for sale.
The 3ft tall object had been inside the religious building at Arras which was shelled in April 1917.
An unnamed member of the Royal Flying Corp was given special permission to remove the painted oak carving from the burning remains of the cathedral.
In an ironic twist, St Agnes herself was effectively rescued from flames when attempts to burn her at the stake 1,700 years ago failed.
