The exploits of a fearless World War Two pilot who clocked up over 70 sorties including a famous 'tree-top' raid can be revealed after his medals and log books emerged for sale.

Squadron Leader Leonard Welch, of 605 Squadron, flew a Mosquito at 100ft altitude across enemy territory to Vienna, Austria, to attack an airfield in October 1944.

Accompanied by one other Mosquito, they destroyed at least six German aircraft on the ground before coming under fire themselves.

Sq Ldr Welch's aircraft was hit but they limped back to base following a six-hour, 1,700 mile round trip.
