Fascinating early photos of submarine warfare featuring close quarters views of German battleships have come to light 100 years later.

The photo albums were collated by British Commander Maurice Bailward who documented every stage of his naval career.

Cmdr Bailward attended Royal Naval College in Osborne, Isle of Wight, from 1906 and 1908, the same time as Edward, the Prince of Wales.

He was involved in many of the major sea battles of World War Two as well as the British effort to help the Whites during the Russian Civil War of 1919.
The albums have emerged for sale at auction from a family descendant with Lawrences Auctioneers, of Crewkerne, Somerset.
