A metal detectorist is celebrating today after a 1,400 year-old Anglo-Saxon hanging bowl he discovered sold for £36,400.
Chris Ulliott found the important relic, believed to date from 550-700 AD, on farmland in Ryedale, North Yorks, in February.
He dug down over a foot after getting a strong signal and initially thought he had located a Victorian bucket.
But he in fact had uncovered a 8ins copper-alloy bowl with three rings, a disc and a few sheep bones inside it. It was found with three attached matching hooked key hole covers (escutcheons) and suspension rings.
The sale was held by London-based Timeline Auctions, who said it was a 'historically important' find.
