The Polish port was soon ablaze.

A chilling unseen album recording the very first shots of WW2 has been rediscovered - detailing the German attack on the Polish garrison of Westerplatte near modern day Gdansk.

The battleship Schleswig-Holstein fired the first broaside at dawn on the 1st September 1939, beginning the German invasion of Poland, that two days later brought Britain into the war.

The incredible pictures were taken by a young sailor on board the battleship who went on to serve in the feared Scharnhorst later in the war.
