A gold pocket watch recovered from the body of the richest man on the Titanic has sold for a world record price of £1.175m.
The 14 carat gold Waltham watch belonged to business magnate John Jacob Astor.
Despite his enormous wealth, the 47-year-old went down with the ship after seeing his pregnant wife Madeleine into a lifeboat.
His watch, which bears his initials JJA and was later restored by his son Vincent Astor, went under the hammer at auction in Wiltshire yesterday (Sat).
A fierce bidding war saw it sell for almost eight times its estimate, making it the most valuable item of Titanic memorabilia ever sold.
