Troops pose for photograph - Bulawayo, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) 1896 and 1900.
These fascinating photos capture life in southern Africa at the end of the 20th century at a time of great uncertainty for the region.
They were taken between 1896 and 1900 and cover the period of the Second Matabele War in Rhodesia, today known as Zimbabwe.
One photo shows soldiers at a lookout with ammunition around their necks poised and ready to fire.
Another image is of a laager, an encampment protected by a circle of wagons or armored vehicles.
There is also the remarkable sight of troops lined up on bicycles and an imposing fort in the hills.
